What Does It Mean To Be Hawaiian Outside Of Hawaii?

Aloha e kuʻu ʻOhana nui,

Last year, Honolulu Civil Beat sent several journalists to the continent to interview Kānaka Maoli (Native Hawaiians) living abroad for a new podcast series about the Native Hawaiian diaspora. During their visit to Las Vegas, reporters Kuʻu Kauanoe and Jessica Terrell met with my parents (Keonona and Joan Marciel) and I, along with some of our Hawaiian friends who have also moved here. The podcast, Offshore Season 4: Far From Home, kicked off this week in the following article:

https://www.civilbeat.org/2020/05/what-does-it-mean-to-be-hawaiian-outside-of-hawaii/

As proven time and again at Marciel family reunions, we have generations of ʻOhana living across the American continent. So, enjoy reading the article and listening to the first episode of the podcast provided at the end of it. Among the stories shared in the report is that of Keonona Marciel.

Provided below the podcast is a questionnaire inviting more Native Hawaiians to share their story.

The article next lists the three authors. Their full bios can be viewed by clicking on their names.

Comments are the final item in the article, which provide an indication of how well the series is already received.

Today, the authors are launching a weekly live stream to talk story about the previous episode, answer questions, and meet more kānaka living abroad. These sessions are scheduled for Wednesdays at 10:00 a.m. HST, conducted as a video call using Zoom. For those interested in attending, here is the page where you can RSVP:
