JOHN VIERRA MARCIEL: Born at Hāna, Maui, on Feb. 12, 1884; died on Nov. 15, 1956, at Lāhainā, Maui. LYDIA CECILIA MARCIEL: Born at Waimea, Hawaiʻi, on June 21, 1888; died on Oct. 10, 1963, at Lāhainā, Maui.
John graduated from St. Louis College in 1904. John and Lydia were in the Territorial Educational field for many years. John became principal of Kaʻapahu School in Hāmākua in 1905, then Laupāhoehoe and Honomū Schools and finally supervising principal of the Hāmākua District. He was also district magistrate of North Hilo. He moved to Maui as head of the Wailuku Sugar Company’s Personnel Office. He later worked for the Territorial Board of Health from which he retired on February 28, 1955. A talented musician, John organized the first school bands in North Hilo where he taught. When he first moved to Maui he was an organizer and leader of the St. Anthony School Band, of the 1st Battalion. He was very active in other community affairs such as the Holy Name Society (Secretary for 16 years and President for 3 terms). John was also President of the Kamehameha Lodge and also President of the Hale O Nā Aliʻi of Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian Historical Society). This Society has thought so highly of John that the Museum of Hawaiiana has “KEONI” room dedicated to our John V. Marciel.
John and Lydia were blessed with a STRING OF PEARLS (eight sons and five daughters): Valentine Umi, Anthony Kealoha, John Jr., Stanley, Margaret, Jeanette, William, Cecilia (Liberty), Rosemary (Peggy), Charlotte, Clement "Buddy", David, Patrick (adopted)
